Amazon.com Prime Membership charged me though i pressed don’t renew!

I asked: why does amazon charge when i pressed the don’t renew (don’t update it) button and then it was confirmed?

they charged my debit card $79.00 which i only had $8.50 in!

i went on the online chat with customer service and they said they cancelled it and I will eventually see the refund – then we’ll give you $5.00 credit for the trouble,

It wont help the fact that now the bank account is in the red and I had to ask the bank not to charge me any fees because Amazon charged my card without my consent!

Amazon take notice: $5.00 won’t make me shut up.

The fact is you charged me when you shouldn’t have.

As a student, if you are charged the prime member fee by Amazon unfortunately, you can turn your position to the student member and refund part of the fee. On the website of Amazon, it indicates “If you’re already an Amazon Prime member, you can still sign up for Amazon Student if you are eligible. After you sign up for Amazon Student, we’ll refund you the remaining months left on your current Amazon Prime subscription. “

Hi guys, I’m from the U.K so it might be a little different but I’ve signed up for the Prime Trial and immediately followed the instructions posted above to cancel the trial after making my first order. However, I’ve noticed that if I refresh the page after clicking ‘Do not auto upgrade’, it reverts back to the original ‘Your account will be upgraded’. Any help please?

Thank you, thank you, Budi. After reading all the horror stories regarding canceling a Prime Membership, I finally found, in your answer, the help I needed. I had thought that I succeeded with the cancellation on line, then to make sure I called your magic number. It turns out that my membership had not been canceled, thus the use of the number, but in two seconds Ezekiel (really, that’s his name, great for the holidays) had terminated the dreaded curse of a Prime Membership My heart is freeee!! Oh, yes, the number is 866-216-1072. You go girl!!

I actually went through the process of canceling the upgrade immediately after signing up for the free 1 month trial and they STILL billed me $79 which overdrew my acct (-$35). Fortunately for them this was a quick fix and they were able to refund my membership fee and bank of america was nice enough to remove the overdraft fee once the refund was paid. I like Amazon but that s*** is sneaky and I promise you I did correctly chose to not upgrade once the trial was over knowing well they could pull this.

I understand how to stop the auto upgrade, but I can’t find anything that states specifically whether I will be charged for benefits used during the trial period. I would assume the definition of Free Trial would indicate that one won’t be charged for using it, but you never know with online stuff, and 79 bucks is a lot of money. Does anyone know if you get charged for using the free shipping and then canceling the upgrade?

Well, I subscribed to Amazon Prime on August 4, and as I won’t on today, It sad that I had until November 3 until they billed me. It would be better for you to unsubscribe before they charge you, so about a week in advance should suffice. It won;t automatically cancel, it’ll just not renew your membership after the specified date.

For those who do not know how to get there, simply go to your account, scroll down to about midway, and look for a link that says “Manage Prime Account”. From then, it’ll only be a few more steps.

Mine said 1 month free trial, cancel the upgrade at any time.

I just did and seemed very easy and straightforward. ?

Now says:

“Your membership is set to not upgrade automatically. To continue receiving Amazon Prime benefits without interruption, please click “Upgrade automatically” below.
Your trial membership will not upgrade to a full membership automatically on August 22, 2009″

Thanks for this post. It’s a great reminder – and after searching Amazon for instructions, they were kind of ambiguous by stating “you can cancel your Amazon Prime membership (except for any promotional trial memberships)”. It gives the impression that you can’t “cancel” the free trail when in fact you can stop the “auto upgrade”.

Gee I wonder how many people couldn’t find the link, then forgot about it, and then got an overdraft fee because a month later they only had $78.65 in there bank account when Amazon billed them for $79 for AP. Ah, the hassle of free trials!

DO NOT PAY THE FEE!! ACtually either way your ok, just if you pay it, then you have to wait for them to credit it back…

BUT as long as you did not use the service after your initial order then YOU ARE entitled to the FULL refund!

Calling them from across the pond may be a bit difficult I understand.

Here is a better alternative for you, just sign into your Amazon account, click on the contact us or may be called customer support and PI YOW, you can speak with an amazon rep ONLINE..they will either chat live or email you back!

simply ask them to remove the charge

I am about to cancel the Prime Membership even after the charge of $79. Should get the refund since I didn’t place any order! Here is what is says after I click on the infamous “Cancel membership” button:

Are you sure you want to cancel? Canceling means you will lose your Prime benefits immediately. Any new or pending orders may be subject to shipping charges. Canceling your membership will also cancel the membership benefits of any invited household members. Since you haven’t used your benefits, we will refund you your membership fee in full if you choose to cancel. (Please note that if your latest membership charge is still in process, we cannot issue a refund until the charge is completed.)

My only question is if the last part in brackets means that I first have to pay my credit card bill in order to get the refund?? Being from Germany it’s a little harder to call Amazon.com support. Maybe you guys have a hint. The credit card bill came two days ago. Do I pay the bill and then get the refund? Or can I go ahead and cancel my membership without paying the credit card bill first?

I got a notice today to renew my prime. I had recent activity on my card and had canceled it with the bank. I saw this website and sure enough last year I was charged $79 and they were getting ready to do it again. I like some of the others am on disability and a fixed income. Damn, everybody is trying to steal your last dime. That is a good scam they are running. I didn’t know what a prime was. Couple of neck pillows listing for $4.95 that cost me $88.90.

They almost got me man. I cancelled my order, called the help line told them to cancel it. I’ll be charged $79 then will gwt back the full refund 3 days from now, I just wanna buy me the new laptop, i should have just clicked the 3-5 days shipping rather than trusting Amazon’s promise, they should have written down that you can only get a refund if you 1.Cancel the service before 30 days 2. Do not order anything except for the first purchase.

I just canceled my amazon prime trial subscription by calling the Amazon customer service at 1-866-216-1072 directly(I placed a single order during my Prime free trial).It was really fast and easy.Be ready with your email address,full name& address plus tell the customer sales rep.your intention of canceling your trial subscription account.There will be an authorization charge on your bank statement which later will debited back to your bank account.A few minutes later, your Amazon Prime page should say “Your Amazon prime trial has been canceled”.Now you are really safe and Amazon will not be able to charge you even a penny!Hope this helps.

as long as you didn’t make a 2nd purchase ( i.e. beside the initial one) then YES you will get it refunded,

I signed up for the trial to get the free fash shippin or whatever and then forgot about it since the reminder I had set up at work to remind me to cancel in 3 months didn’t get thru to me.. probably because I was fired/Layed off, that is UNTIL a $80 charge on my card.. but anyway since I hadn’t used the prime benefit besides the initial order I was refunded the $80 back.. and now I love amazon PLUS they ( at least now) have AWESOME customer service..

What in the world?! This is almost comical, why do so many folks post on a random website asking to have their Amazon prime cancelled? hahahahahaha….

Anyway, I just signed up for free trial, went to my account, clicked do not upgrade…exactly like nickel said…how hard is that?! Folks can’t read, if you signed up for a real membership (not a trial promotion), of course it’s different. And if you’re posting your name/email/pls cancel msgs on a random website, what good does that do besides letting strangers make fun of you…

There is no “cancel membership” button listed anywhere on the page. There is also no phone number to call. I went in and removed all of my credit cards, so they have no way to bill me. F-you amazon. Under the help section:

I clicked “place order” button, which they regarded it as my agreement to enroll in that fucking prime membership, and charge me $79.99.

Amazon is really destroying their own reputation online!!! I just talked to Amazon customer services representative, and I called them cheater and asked them to get my money back!
