What are the potential negative ramifications for my excellent credit score if I continually sign up for and cancel a credit card solely to take their sign up bonus? I’ve used a BOA Alaska Airlines card for many years (~5) and am paying off a balance at a low promotional rate with Chase. I’ve had the card for ~3 years.
Comment by Huffles — Oct 9th 2007 @ 12:58 pmHuffles: I wrote an article addressing that exact point:
Credit Card Bonus Chasing and Your Credit Score
The bottom line is that this sort of thing has a relatively small and short-lived effect on your credit score.
Nickel, I don’t see anything on that landing page that references the bonuses. Have you seen something there before?
Comment by VC — Oct 9th 2007 @ 1:25 pmNevermind. I see the bonus info referenced on the next page after hitting the ‘Apply Now’ button.
Comment by VC — Oct 9th 2007 @ 1:29 pmhow soon after can you cancel the card? there’s no penalties?
Comment by girlrobot — Oct 9th 2007 @ 1:43 pmNo penalties. I wouldn’t cancel before the reward shows up and you use it (6-8 weeks). Other than that, cancel as quickly as you want.
Have to say thanks. Been on site reading for last few months for general advice. Never thought I’d make a deal too like this. Have good credit ( 800+ ) so one inquiry should be fine. Thanks again. Easy as clicking your click here button on this last day of the offer.
