ING Direct Introduces User-Friendly Login Names
This is just a quick note to let you guys know that ING Direct, which is the top online bank amongst FiveCentNickel readers, has rolled out a new feature to making logging into your account even easier.
Instead of having to use a clumsy, eight digit customer number, you can now create a custom “Saver ID.” Honestly, I’m not sure how long this option has been around, but I didn’t notice it until about a week ago.
Here’s the scoop…
Trouble remembering your Customer Number? You now have the option of creating you own easy-to-remember username to login, known as a “Saver ID.” Then, you can use either your Saver ID or Customer Number to login.
To create your own Saver ID, login and click the ‘My Info’ tab.
So there you have it… ING Direct just got even easier to use.

It’s been around for a little while at least– I had the option when I opened my ING account in the beginning of February.
Comment by Jennifer — Apr 15th 2008 @ 10:29 amThis is wonderful news. We have an ING account for our daughter that we put spare change, birthday money, etc. in. This will definitely make it easier to make deposits.
Comment by Raesmom — Apr 15th 2008 @ 11:56 amThis is old news.
Comment by Old News — Apr 15th 2008 @ 12:30 pmMight be old news but I didn’t know…and I gotta say, thank God, its about time.
Comment by Jesse — Apr 15th 2008 @ 2:55 pmI also opened my account at the beginnning of Feb, and it wasn’t an option then. It was one of the things, if not the only thing, I complained about when asked about the sign up process.
Comment by Gayle — Apr 15th 2008 @ 6:36 pmWell, congratulations Ing! Welcome to 2003
. No one likes to sign in to things with their account numbers. it’s such a pain to remember.
Ah well, better late than never is what I always say.
Comment by Zachary Spencer — Apr 15th 2008 @ 7:33 pmI don’t remember when this came out, but I was very excited. There are so many numbers I try to remember in everyday life. Instead I just used the SN I had used before in banking.
Comment by Mrs. Micah — Apr 15th 2008 @ 8:32 pmHmm…I’ve used this option ever since the first day I opened the account, which was quite awhile back. I have a habit of going through all the settings of any account I have so that’s how I found this.
Have people really been memorizing their account numbers?! I feel bad…I should’ve said something earlier!
Comment by Eric — Apr 15th 2008 @ 9:00 pmI had no idea this feature was even there. Awesome! I never bothered to memorize my number though because I would just go into Gmail and search for that email.
Comment by Clever Dude — Apr 16th 2008 @ 9:44 amThis is awesome! I had always only used Yodlee MoneyCenter auto-login to access ING Direct because it was such a pain to dig out the customer number.
Thanks for informing those of us who weren’t aware.
Comment by Partial Exponent — Apr 16th 2008 @ 3:25 pmUsernames have been around since sometime last year.
One nice security feature that ING has that I have not seen elsewhere is that you enter your 4-digit PIN (yeah I know, how secure is that?) on a screen keypad. The keypad associates a letter to each digit. This letter changes each time you try to login, so it is impossible to guess.
