For the American Express Blue Cash card, the 5% cash back kicks in only when you have already spent $6500 on the card for the year. This card may be good for big spenders. For most card holders, they may never get to the 5% level. So, other cards with 2% or 3% cash back on gas and grocery may be better.

Effective March 1, 2011, PenFed will no long offer 2% cash back for supermarket purchases. You will continue to earn 5% cash back on gas purchases made at the pump and 1% on everything else, including your supermarket purchases.

    Steve Says:

The Blue Cash Preferred card by American Express actually has 6% rewards on groceries and 3% on gas and department stores. Much better than the regular Blue Cash except for the $75 annual fee. For some people that spend allot of money on groceries and gas it could be well worth it.
