Budget Cuts, Fireworks, and the 4th of July

Written by Nickel - 7 Comments

Budget Cuts, Fireworks, and the 4th of JulyWhile skimming through the news this week, I ran across an interesting article about communities that are cutting back on, or canceling, their 4th of July fireworks displays due to budget cuts. In general, residents have been on board with such decisions, though some are understandably disappointed.

In some cases, corporate sponsors have stepped in to save the day, but in other cases people will either go without, or they’ll have to drive to neighboring communities to get their fireworks fix.

What about in your neck of the woods? Has your local fireworks show been affected by the economic slowdown? To be honest, I’m not sure what’s happening in our area, as we’re currently on the road and won’t be back until after all of the festivities.

Either way, I hope you have a fantastic (and safe) 4th of July!

I think fireworks displays should be limited to those individuals and communities that are wealthy enough to burn money.

My house is surrounded by low income rental apartments and every year my neighbors burn money, in the guise of fireworks, that they can ill afford to lose. It boggles my mind.

I haven’t gone to see fireworks for years, so I won’t really miss them. I have a box of sparklers for if I really need some flash! Honestly, a sparker in my own garden away from the crowds and the holiday traffic does it quite nicely for me :)

Having moved from one of the most spectacular fireworks display over the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, to the exclusion of those in NYC and D.C. and maybe parts out West, everywhere else will be hard put to measuring up. However, even those few are no longer immune.

I now live just 40 miles south of Erie, PA, and the city decided to cancel the fireworks display due to budget cuts. It’s a matter of priorities, although everybody has their ideas of what’s more important.

It’s a shame, because when I was growing up in Naples, FL back in the late 60s, we’d go out to the main pier which jutted out for several hundred yards into the Gulf waters. Back then I thought those were the prettiest fireworks displays I remember ever seeing.

    I miss those 4th of Julys……

I live in Greenwood SC. One of the college’s here used to have a firework show annually at their own expense that was $10,000+ . Two years ago they cancelled it, now a small town Ninety Six, SC that is in the same county have a fireworks show in place of the one that was at Piedmont Tech. But I think the town takes up donations, I’m not sure and have volunteers to help them. I haven’t been to the one in 96,it is a little further distance for me, but they do have the same turnout or bigger than Piedmont Tech. That’s a good thing though.

I have no idea what my community is doing. I work the night shift this year.

Our town still had a show yesterday, but it didn’t seem to be as extravagant as it usually is. Looked kinda…cheap.

See a video of it on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....w&hd=1

Stay safe out on the road Nickle.

In Melbourne Florida there was an excellent parade. A couple areas have had or are having fireworks. Not as big as it was years ago. Nice day so far on the 4th, but starting to hear thunder. I Enjoy your blog, please visit mine to read my 4th of July Message to our country. Thanks and have a great 4th of July!
