Using ING Direct’s Smartphone App to Deposit Checks

Written by Nickel - 3 Comments

Reducing the Cost of Medical Care

As a followup to my earlier post about remote deposit at ING Direct, I just wanted to share my first deposit experience. I had two small checks lying around so I figured I’d test it out.

Here are the steps:

  1. Endorse your check.
  2. Launch the app and hit the “deposit” button.
  3. Snap a photo of the front of the check.
  4. Snap a photo of the signed back of the check.
  5. Enter the amount of the check on the next screen.
  6. Select the account into which you want to deposit the check.
  7. Enter any relevant notes about the deposit.
  8. Repeat for additional checks.

Seconds later, I had a pair of e-mail notifications (one for each check) stating that my deposits would post the next business day (since I made the deposits after 5PM).

At 10AM this morning, I received another pair of e-mails stating that the deposits had been processed and that I was free to void the checks. The funds are showing up in my balance, but are not yet “available”. Since both checks were so small, I expect the full amounts to be made available tomorrow.

What do you do with the checks after depositing them? Can you get ride of them or do you keep them as proof? If so, how long should you keep them for?

    Nickel Says:

Ken: You hang onto them until you get confirmation that the deposit has been processed, at which time you should void/destroy them.

Thanks for the heads up; I have been waiting for this since it was announced lo these many moons ago.

I tried it, but ended up with only 2 of 3 checks deposited. It kept rejecting one of them saying there was no endorsement signature. Looks like their server-side cropping clipped the sig the first time; I tried twice more, with darker backgrounds and even re-signing with a black felt-tip, but it gave the same message. I suspect a bug of some sort, where it is not clearing the error for retries. (A second check from the same source went through no problem on the first try.)

Anyway, you’ll have this, and I’m pleased they’ve enabled it all the same.
