American Express Promo Codes for Fee-Free Gift Cards

5 Ways to Save by Buying Slightly Damaged Goods

If you’re looking for an easy way to max out any of the recent credit card signup offers that I’ve posted about then I suggest that you check out American Express gift cards.

In reality, just about any gift card will do for time-shifting purchases into the promo window, but store gift cards can be rather limiting. Gift cards backed by a major credit card issuer are an attractive option since they can be used just about anywhere. Unfortunately, such cards usually come with activation (and possibly other) fees.

But guess what? AmEx gift cards have no inactivity fees, no expiration dates, no fees for the recipient, and there are currently promo codes floating around out there for waiving the activation and/or shipping fees. You can buy a consumer card in amounts ranging from $25-$3k. Moreover, if they’re lost or stolen, the remaining balance can be recovered.

Through 08/15/12, you can use code EMDADWEL to waive the $3.95 purchase fee. Similarly, through 06/30/12 you can use codes EMMOTWEL or REMMOTWEL to get free 2nd day shipping (an $8.95 value). Or you can use codes GRADUATE or FATHER617 (likewise good through 06/30/12) for free standard shipping (a $5.95 value).

If you use online rebate services eBates, FatWallet, or BigCrumbs then you can get additional cash back by going through their links. Pretty slick, and a handy way to break through reward tiers now that you can no longer buy dollar coins from the Mint with a credit card.

Do you know if these Amex cards can be used to pay tax at websites like payusatax.com and count as debit cards? That’d be awesome because the fee for debit cards is usually about $4-$5 range flat-rate; good way to earn some cash-back.

Unfortunately, American Express prepaid cards cannot be purchased with credit cards, so I don’t think the time-shifting comment applies.

However, AmEx does have a great promo through 6/30/2012: purchase a card loaded with $200, and get a $25 card free later.

Barb: Not sure where you got your information, but it’s wrong — at least with respect to the gift cards accessible through the link above. I just double-checked and yes, you can pay with another credit card. They accept Amex, Visa, MasterCard, and Discover. Perhaps you’re thinking of a different product.

I think Barb is talking prepaid cards and you’re talking gift cards. They are different products.

Has anyone had success using any of the above codes and going through fatwallet? The system doesn’t seem to want to accept the code if i do it that way…
