The Most Valuable College Football Teams

In honor of the BCS National Championship Game, which I’m watching as I write this, here’s a rundown of the most valuable programs in college football:

  1. Texas
  2. Michigan
  3. Florida
  4. Notre Dame
  5. Ohio State
  6. Auburn
  7. Georgia
  8. Alabama
  9. LSU
  10. Oklahoma

These ranking are based on the hypothetical sales price of each program based on revenue, expenses, and projected growth rates. Texas, which ranking #1, has an estimated value of a little over $760M.

As for the teams vying for the title, Notre Dame is valued at $597M (4th place) and Alabama is valued at $476M (8th place). Though, with the beating that Notre Dame is taking, the difference might be smaller by morning… ;-)

Well, it’s nice to see Michigan on the list — but I would have said it was valuable because of its tradition and long winning record. We wear our blue and gold proudly in this house.

    GO BLUE!!

I’d want to see the full report with its methodology. If you look at the WSJ article you can see the top 69 programs listed and some of it makes no sense. Colorado is above USC. I can’t imagine thats realistic. No offense to Colorado fans but their program doesn’t have the current or past history and success as USC nor the kind of money USC sees. That makes me wonder how accurate these numbers are. That top 10 list seems legitimate enough and I know those are all big money programs but I’d wonder about the exact rankings.
